Iran CNG Achievements

More than two decades have passed since distribution stations were launched for CNG in Iran. That has given rise to a variety of achievements in Iran, including a new business market, energy security, private sector contribution, and cutting environmental pollution.

· Creating a fully new business market, backed by the Ministry of Petroleum on behalf of the government, in one decade

  • Drawing up national standards
  • Indigenizing CNG storage tanks manufacturing by seamless pipe spinning
  • Indigenizing industrial-scale gas-fuelled kits
  • Indigenizing equipment for CNG stations
  • Indigenizing gas engine
  • Encouraging private sector to have effective contribution
  • Job creation (36,000 direct and indirect job opportunities)

· Energy Security / Economic Advantages

  • Diversifying light transport fleet fuel mix
  • Average supply of 20.7 mcm/d of CNG (20.3% of light transport vehicle fuel mix)
  •   Supply of more than 58 bcm of CNG since start of project (saving hard currency for non-import of 58 billion liters of gasoline)

· Establishing dual-fuel vehicles fleet (4 million), supported by Ministry of Petroleum on behalf of the government

  • Converting one million gasoline-fuelled vehicles to dual-fuel cars
  • Manufacturing of 3 million dual-fuel vehicles by domestic carmakers   

· CNG Supply Section

  • Launching 2,400 equipped CNG stations

· Preparing the Ground for Private Sector Effective Presence

  • Providing free CNG station equipment to private sector applicants in accordance with government regulations
  • Adopting regulation for special service fee in March 2014 about applicants for CNG station building while accounting for all construction, connections and equipment costs
  • Launching 60 CNG stations while accounting for all construction, connections and equipment costs
  • Sixty-four stations are under construction while accounting for all construction, connections and equipment costs
